Tips and Tricks When Applying Removable Wallpaper

When applied correctly, temporary wallpaper is quick and easy to apply and won’t damage your walls. Keep these tips in mind: 
  • Clean and dry the surface first: the wallpaper won’t adhere well to an unclean surface 
  • If the surface is newly painted, wait at least 30 days for it to dry before papering 
  • Make sure to remove any electrical outlet face plates and wall fixtures 
  • Don’t use removable wallpaper on a textured wall: apply it only to a smooth, flat surface 
  • Apply the paper over eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss paint: don’t apply it on matte or flat paint as the adhesive may cause damage
We do not recommend installing peel and stick wallpaper on: 
  • Textured walls 
  • Wallpaper 
  • Brick/cinderblock 
  • Unpainted drywall/sheetrock or plaster 
  • Non-stick paint 
  • Floors

How to Measure

Once you decide on a design, you’ll want to figure out how many rolls you need. To do so:  
  1. Determine the coverage of one roll 
  2. Measure the height and width of the wall (or surface) to find the square footage 
  3. Calculate as follows: (width x height) ÷ roll coverage = number of rolls  
Example: (9 ft. x 8 ft.) ÷ 28.18 sq. ft. = 2.6 rolls. (In this case, you would round up to 3 rolls.) 

Purchasing Tip: It’s a good idea to order extra wallpaper. Once you calculate how much you need, add an extra 10–20% to account for any mistakes during your calculations or application. 

Windows and Doors 
If you have large windows or a large doorway, you can simply calculate their square footage and subtract it from the wall area. For standard sizes, we recommend you calculate it the same way you would a blank wall to ensure you have enough wallpaper.

Steps to Successful Stick-On Wallpaper Installation

Follow these steps to successfully install your stylish new peel and stick wallpaper. 
  1. Give the product time to acclimate to the room temperature before applying, ideally a minimum of 48 hours. 
  2. Make sure you have all the required tools handy: utility knife, level, ruler, pencil, measuring tape, plastic smoother and step stool. 
  3. Remove all electrical outlet face plates and fixtures. 
  4. Thoroughly clean and dry the surface. 
  5. Beginning on the left side of your wall, measure out the width of the paper with a tape measure and mark the wall lightly with a pencil (for a feature wall, start in the center to ensure symmetry). 
  6. Put your level on this mark and draw a straight, vertical line. This is the guide for your first strip. Allow an extra inch or two for trimming both the top and bottom. 
  7. Measure and pre-cut strips of wallpaper to fit the height of the wall. 
  8. Peel back about 12 inches of the backing on a strip. Line up the top of the paper at the ceiling and slowly peel and stick the paper down the wall. Note: Allow a bit of excess paper to overlap at the ceiling. 
  9. Repeat to the right with remaining strips, taking care to overlap the seams. 
  10. Use a plastic smoother to get rid of the air bubbles and create an even look. Trim off excess material at the ceiling and baseboard.
