Here’s How to Pick the Best Chainsaw or Chipper for Your Yard

Here’s How to Pick the Best Chainsaw or Chipper for Your Yard

If you have a property with trees and bushes that need to be maintained, you may want to consider a chainsaw and wood chipper. Whether you’re felling trees, trimming branches or cutting brush, these powerful yard tools will come in handy.

The Difference Between Chainsaws and Chippers

The main difference between a chainsaw and chipper is their usage and order of operations. You’ll use the chainsaw first for initial cutting, and then break the pieces down in the chipper along with any other rough yard debris.

When to Use a Chainsaw

Trees can become unstable due to rot or storm damage. A chainsaw is essential for cutting through large trunks and sawing off big branches. These can then be cut down further for use, such as firewood. It can also be used to landscape your yard: limbing, bucking and pruning for optimal appearance and sun exposure.

When to Use a Chipper

Chippers are used to break down twigs, leaves, branches and other organic yard waste into small particles. This allows for easy disposal in bags, or convenient, cost-saving use as compost or mulch. in handy.

The Different Types of Chainsaws

Not all chainsaws are alike. Each type has its own unique features that are suited to a particular set of tasks depending on the job at hand.

Gas Chainsaws
A gas chainsaw is best used for larger jobs, like cutting down sizeable branches or felling large trees, because it offers the most power, mobility and efficiency. Gas chainsaws also have a long bar (the metal guide and chain that protrudes from the housing) ranging from 12” to 20”. This allows it to tackle larger trunks and branches. Gas chainsaws do require more maintenance, however, and they’re also louder and emit fumes while running.

Electric Chainsaws
If you only need to trim, prune or cut small branches, an electric chainsaw will do the trick. It can also be used to cut firewood logs or fell younger, smaller trees. Electric chainsaws are slightly smaller than their gas-powered counterparts, and have a bar length that ranges from 6” to 18”.

This type is less powerful than a gas chainsaw, and corded models will need a nearby outlet to operate. On the plus side, it’s lightweight, quieter and emission-free. Electric chainsaws are also more affordable and require less maintenance.

Pole Chain Saws
Pole models feature a small saw attached to an extension pole, so you can reach up high to trim and prune small tree limbs or branches without using a ladder. Pole chain saws have a bar length that ranges from 6” to 12” and a height that ranges from 10’ to 12’. Gas, electric, battery-powered and manual models are available.

Battery Powered Chainsaws
Cordless or battery operated chainsaws have the least amount of power, so they’re best used for pruning and trimming work on smaller trees. The running time is tied to battery life, which can pose an issue depending on the length of the project. They do, however, offer more mobility than corded electric chainsaws, and require less maintenance than gas chainsaws. In terms of weight, battery chainsaws range from 12 to 15 pounds.

The Different Types of Chippers

If you have a large amount of organic debris or brush to clear in your yard, you’ll probably need a chipper more than a chainsaw. There are three main types of chippers. The one best suited to you will depend on the size of your yard, the type of yard debris, and how often you need to clear it away.

Electric Wood Chippers
An electric wood chipper is compact and lightweight, making it ideal for smaller yards and landscapes. It’s emission-free and easy to operate, but does need to be plugged into an outlet. A long extension cord will come in handy for jobs further away from the house. Due to its smaller size, an electric wood chipper should only be used on small twigs and branches less than 1-1/2” in diameter.

Gas-Powered Wood Chippers
Larger and more powerful, a gas-powered wood chipper is probably your best choice if you have a large property and large branches to mulch. It can easily shred branches from 1-1/2” to 7” thick, as well as leaves. Gas wood chippers are available in a range of sizes to support both residential and commercial use.
Lawn Vacuum
A lawn vacuum is a great option for smaller properties with less lawn debris (and less storage space). It’s best used to collect fallen leaves, pine needles and other minor organic yard waste. Look for a model with a hose attachment if you need to vacuum up leaves and needles from gardens, shrubs or plant beds. Chipper chute attachments are also available for smaller branches.

Safety Tips for Chainsaws and Chippers

Chainsaws and chippers are powerful machines with exposed moving parts that can cause serious harm if not used properly. Always be sure to read the user manual and instructions before using a chainsaw or chipper, and keep the following general guidelines in mind.

Dress Appropriately

Never wear loose clothing when operating a chainsaw or chipper. It could get caught in the blade or chute and cause serious injury. Stay on the side of caution and always wear clothes that are snug when performing heavy-duty yard work.

Use the Right Safety Equipment

It’s equally important to use the right safety equipment when operating chainsaws and chippers. Make sure to don safety glasses and cut-resistant safety gloves to protect your eyes and hands. Protective gear for your ears is also advised when using louder gas-powered models. Slip-resistant work boots are also essential, and if you’re trimming large branches a safety helmet will help protect you from falling debris.

Maintain Your Machines

It’s important to maintain your machines to keep them operating safely and smoothly. Chainsaws should be sharpened according to specifications and should always be clean and well-lubricated before use. Clear your chipper of any old debris before using it. Also, be sure to sweep away debris that collects around the hopper to avoid slipping near the machine while it’s in use.

Stay alert

Always stay alert when using either a chainsaw or a chipper, and work with a partner whenever possible.

Keep both hands on a chainsaw handle when it’s in use and never cut anything with the bar tip. Always make sure the chainsaw comes to a complete stop before reaching for the chain or bar. When not in use, carry it so that the bar points behind you. Make use of the safety features on your chainsaw, which can include a bar tip guard, anti-kickback function, hand guards, stop switches and chain brakes.

When using a chipper, stay focused and feed debris in carefully, one small load at a time. Push the load down with a long branch or a pole. Never reach into the hopper or chute, and keep your hands away from the blades at all times.
When used properly, these machines can help keep your yard or property neat, clean and safe. Learn more and decide which one is right for you by browsing through our selection of chainsaws and chippers.
