What You'll Need


Here’s How

  • Measure and mark the height of the wainscotting. Place painter’s tape level at that height.
  • Paint the lower and upper portions of the wall. Let dry.
  • Remove tape.
  • Install the timber mantle.

What You'll Need

Here’s How
  • Paint the entire wall white or a light colour. Let dry.
  • Mask off area that is to be black or a dark colour with tape. 
  • Paint the area. Let dry. Remove tape. 

Tip: Run a credit card along the tape edge before painting to ensure a clean, sharp line.

Character Building

What You'll Need
Here’s How
  • Paint the wall your desired colour. Let dry.
  • Measure the length and height of your wall to determine the size of the largest moulding panels you can create, taking into account the spacing between them (in the example shown, the top panels are 3’ x 6’ and the bottom panels are 3’ x 1’ with 5” spacing between panels and 1’ spacing to the floor
  • Take the height and width of the top panel and subtract one foot from its length and height to get the measurements for the first interior panel (2’ x 5’ in the example shown), and repeat again for the final interior panel (1’ x 4’ in the example shown).
  • With your list of measurements for each panel, begin cutting the tops, bottoms and sides of each panel with mirrored 45° angles on each side of the screen moulding.
  • With all pieces cut and ready, measure up from the floor where you want the first bottom panel to begin, level the bottom moulding piece and nail into place.
  • Level and nail into place the left, right and top pieces to create a moulding panel.
  • Continue with all remaining panels, using equal spacing between them.
  • It is easier and faster if you paint the cut moulding before nailing onto the wall, however it can also be painted after it’s on the wall.

Here's How

  1. Along the bottom of your painted wall, make a small mark every 18". This will be the distance between the low and high points of your chevron.
  2. If you have an automatic laser level, the next few steps are easy. Aligning the vertical laser line to your first mark, measure up from the floor 6" and make a mark. Moving up by 12" increments, continue to make marks until you reach the ceiling.
  3. Align the vertical laser level to the next line, this time making a mark 12" from the floor and continuing, again, to make a mark every 12".
  4. Continue to alternate between a 6" and 12" starting mark until your wall is filled. Note: If you don't have an automatic laser level, you can measure across the top of your wall repeating the 18" marks you made along the bottom. When you're making your vertical marks, make sure the top and bottom marks align using either the tape measure or by snapping a chalk line.
  5. Moving across the bottom of the wall first, tear a strip of 2" painter's tape just long enough to reach from one mark to the next, aligning the top of the tape to each mark.
  6. When you've reached the end of the wall, move up to the next mark and continue back across the wall, only this time aligning the bottom of the tape to each mark. Continue alternating each row.
  7. When the entire wall has been taped, run your finger over each tape edge, pressing firmly to create a tight bond.
  8. Using a paint roller, apply your chevron paint colour to each of the tallest/thickest rows.
  9. Before your paint dries, carefully peel off the tape to reveal a wonderfully sharp-edged chevron pattern.

What you'll need

Tools

Materials
  • four 4” x 4” x 8’ spruce or pine boards (not pressure-treated)
  • 1 1/4” brad nails 1283-024
  • Beauti-Tone Designer Series paint in matte or satin (Colours used - Minty Muse CL08-0 and Diamond Mine CL52-0)

Here's How

  1. ​Set up a stop block 3/8” away from your mitre saw blade to make quick, repetitive cuts.
  2. Cut 3 of the 8’ boards into 3/8” slices.
  3. Move the stop block 3/4” away from the blade and adjust the saw for a 10-degree angle.
  4. Cut the remaining 8’ board into larger, angled biscuits by alternating the saw blade’s angle from 10 degrees to 0 degrees so that each piece has one flat side.
  5. Thin your paint with water at a ratio of 1:1 and paint the slices in your desired colour. For a slightly more dramatic look, paint the angled biscuits in a different colour (shown: Minty Muse CL08-0/Diamond Mine CL52-0). Let dry.
  6. Using a brad nailer and starting your first row at floor level, pin each slice to the wall.
  7. When you have your desired width, move up to the next row and continue until you’ve filled your space.

Here’s How
  • Paint the wall a desired base colour (shown: Steel Waters Run Deep SC190-4). Let dry.
  • Measure and mark vertical lines with a chalk line (shown: 18” square on a 9’ wall).
  • Use the rounded paintbrush and contrasting colour (shown: Self Azure SC180-4) to freehand paint over the chalk lines. The chalk line will help you stay straight while keeping the freehand look. Let dry.
  • Measure and mark the horizontal lines and repeat process.

Architecturally Dressed

Elevate a plain wall to a wow wall with some simple trim, basic carpentry skills, and a paint colour that you just love. It’s a little design trick that produces big results!

What You'll Need
Here’s How
  • Paint the wall the desired colour. Let dry.
  • Determine the vertical space width between each chevron and mark. Nail the vertical dividers in place.
  • Mitre your preferred angles for the chevrons. Cut the left side first with the moulding face up, then flip the moulding over and cut the same angle.
  • It is easier and faster if you paint the cut moulding before nailing the chevrons in place on the wall. Touch up as necessary.

Steeling Good Looks!

Release your inner artist with steel wool to create this stunning feature wall.

Change the strong contrast of the shown monochromatic scheme to a softer, sophisticated look by choosing subtler contrasting colours, or a matte and a gloss sheen in the same colour.

What You’ll Need

Here’s How

  1. Paint wall the base coat colour. Let dry 48 hours.
  2. Measure and mark a square grid on the wall with a chalk line. Squares can be any size you want. The squares shown are two feet.
  3. Tape the outside edges of every alternate square, cutting the tape with a hobby knife for a clean edge.
  4. Use a measuring cup to mix 4 parts topcoat paint to 1 cup extender into a pail. Repeat the formula when more topcoat mixture is needed.
  5. Wearing gloves, unwrap one roll of steel wool and wrap it around a 9.5” roller.
  6. VERTICAL LINES: Paint one masked square with a thin coat of topcoat mixture. Immediately drag the roller wrapped with steel wool vertically in the painted square. Try to drag straight down, and repeat dragging in the square until you achieve your desired effect.
  7. Repeat on each masked square, painting one at a time, using a new roll of steel wool for each square.
  8. Remove tape and let dry 48 hours.
  9. Tape off the remaining squares on the outside. (i.e., tape will be on the finished squares).
  10. HORIZONTAL LINES: Paint the remaining squares one at a time, dragging the roller wrapped with steel wool horizontally each time. Try to drag straight across, and repeat dragging in the square until you achieve your desired effect.
  11. Remove tape.
